Make a Jack Skellington Garage for the Ultimate Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween Decoration
Ten years ago, I created the original blog on how to make a DIY Jack Skellington garage for the ultimate Nightmare Before Christmas decoration. Way back then, my methods for creating a Jack Skellington face on the garage door were crude. I used garbage bags and a whole lot of duct tape. Over the years, I have tried different methods, always sticking to the thriftiest of supplies. Finally, a few Halloweens ago, I perfected my process, and now I can make a Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skellington face on my garage in a flash.
Jack Skellington Garage Supplies
To create a Jack Skellington garage for the coolest DIY Halloween decoration, the supplies are simple and thrifty. It's how I roll with all my crafts. Jack Skellington garage supplies include foam board, adhesive magnets and duct tape. That's it! Once you make your Jack Skellington face with these supplies, you can reuse it every Halloween.
These super-inexpensive, yet durable adhesive magnets are crucial. You simply attach them like stickers to the eyes, nose and the slits of the mouth. I used to use duct tape. Yes, year after year, I was using a crap ton of duct tape on my garage to hang my cut-out pieces. Now I have been able to reuse my cut-out pieces Halloween after Halloween. Jessie Pinkman would be proud of me. If you know, you know!
The most important step in making Jack Skellington on the garage is placement. You want your Halloween decoration to stick in place on a fully functioning automatic garage door. To do this, shape and place your face pieces above and below the slits of the garage where it contracts when opening.
When I made my Jack Skellington on the garage, I eyeballed it by holding up my poster board to the spots on the garage where I wanted Jack Skellington's eyes to sit. I then free-handed Jack's scary eyes on my foam board, cut the foam board with a pocket knife, and added my adhesive magnets all around the edges of the eyes. I did the same for Jack's nostrils and a whole bunch of skinny rectangular pieces for mouth slits. For the mouth slits, I only needed one magnet per slit.
Now, there is one spot I stick by my beloved duct tape: Jack's menacing mouth. I simply cut one long piece of duct tape that goes straight across my garage, just below a contracting slit. Then, I add additional pieces to angle it up into that sinister sneer. I place the skinny rectangular slits atop the duct tape. For a finishing touch, I form the thin anger lines above Jack's eyes with duct tape.
Voila! It's a Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween decoration that attracts attention!
Every year for the past decade, my Jack Skellington garage has been a showstopper Halloween decoration. From any direction passing by my house, people instantly recognize that infamous face!
