DIY Sesame Street Birthday Party for Toddlers

"Sunny day sweepin' the clouds away. On my way to where air is sweet. Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?" In May of 2021 the way to Sesame Street was through my backyard. When my daughter turned 2, I threw a simple DIY Sesame Street birthday party for toddlers. Although it was my daughter's second birthday, it was her first real birthday party because of COVID. As a toddler, my daughter didn't have screentime except for a little Sesame Street, so the wonderful world of Sesame Street was the obvious choice for the party theme.

Sesame Street Themed Party Foods

All of the sweet and silly friends on Sesame Street made selecting Sesame Street themed party foods a breeze. We stuck with homemade buffet foods that kids and adults alike could enjoy. To decorate the Sesame Street party food table, I used Sesame Street stuffed animals (many of which were found at a local thrift store), reusable Sesame Street decals off Amazon and DIY Sesame Street sign food labels. I printed the signs myself and used Scrabble tile holders to prop them up in front of the foods. I also used a bright and colorful Sesame Street tablecloth from Party City.

Sesame Street Party Menu

  • Elmo's Goldfish (Goldfish crackers in cups decorated with pictures of Elmo's goldfish, Dorothy)
  • Cookie Monster's Cookies (chocolate chip cookies)
  • Abby Cadabby's Magic Veggies (zucchini, bell peppers and carrot sticks)
  • Big Bird's Eggs (devilled eggs)
  • Super Grover's Super Fruits (watermelon)
Sesame Street Birthday Party Decorations

With my daughter only being 2 and our kid guestlist only consisting of her youngest cousins, I didn't go overboard on the Sesame Street birthday party decorations. I did, however, invest in a Sesame Street party backdrop off Amazon, which was perfect for pictures. I also used the Sesame Street decals throughout the party.

One way I save money on themed parties is by only purchasing selected branded merchandise and then filling in the gaps with generic, but color-coordinating pieces. For my Sesame Street birthday party decorations, I hit up the Dollar Tree for plates and napkins that tied right into the theme at a less expensive price. I had so many leftovers that I used them again for another party.

Sesame Street Party Games for Toddlers

I love classic kids' party games and activities like pin the tail on the donkey, shoot the target, hot potato, musical chairs and tag, all of which would work for a Sesame Street party games for toddlers, but for our party, we set the kids loose in the backyard to play with a water table, a Sesame Street kitchen, a climbing play structure with slide, a playhouse, balls and lots of toys. All of those things where more than enough to entertain my toddler and her young cousins.

More Sesame Street Party Games
  • Knock down Oscar's cans
  • Cornhole with any character painted on the board
  • Elmo's fishbowl toss (with toy fish the kids can win)
  • Sesame Says (fly like Super Grover, wave Abby's wand, laugh like Ernie, Tickle like Elmo, etc.)
  • Freeze dance to Sesame Street songs

Sesame Street Birthday Party Treats

What would a Sesame Street birthday party be without some Sesame Street birthday party treats? For our small party, we went with the classic personal cake for the birthday girl and cupcakes for all the guests. We decorated the cupcakes with Sesame Street character face toppers and decorated the cake with Sesame Street figures from The Dollar Tree.

Sesame Street Birthday Party Treats
  • Character cake pops
  • Abby's candy wands (sucker candy sticks, pixie sticks or chocolate covered pretzel sticks)
  • Oscar's gummy worms
  • Big Bird's chocolate eggs
  • Cookie Monster's cookies (we did chocolate chip on our buffet table)
  • Gonger's homemade baked goods (banana bread, blueberry muffins, zucchini muffins)
  • The Count's numbered cups of mixed candies
